The need for change
The College is more than 300 years old.
Over this time, Scottish charity law has changed, charity governance principles have changed, society has changed and so has the College itself. .
The College's governing documents (its Charter and Laws) have been updated from time to time to reflect some of these developments, but there are still some gaps and also some inconsistencies, caused by multiple minor amendments which were not correctly linked to each other.
The ultimate aim of the governance changes proposed is to celebrate and maintain what is best about the College - its focus on promoting and improving the science of medicine, and its heritage, while enabling it to run smoothly and properly.
Areas for change
Below is a summary of why Council thinks some changes are needed.
It is important to remember that Council members are the College's charity trustees, which means they have the legal duties described on the Principles page.
